The problem

Zi pay is a point-based payment wallet designed to help make spending simple and fun for individuals and increase sales for small businesses.

A Canadian banker approached me to help build a prototype of an application idea he had, he wanted to have something to show to his stakeholders during his pitch. His idea was to create a point-based mobile wallet that individuals can use to manage their day-to-day spending.

Planning & Strategy

This was a three weeks project, as it appears that the stakeholder had not done his due diligence. I helped him out by planning a one-week business model development session using the LEANSTAK methodology, I then advised on the hiring of a junior UX researcher to help with research, that was the only way we could meet lost time and end the project on time and on budget.

Lean business model

I helped in researching and developing the lean business model and guided the client on how he can continue to use the "continuous innovation" methodology to grow the lean business model by himself. I helped create the pitch deck for the project using a ready-made excel template and shared it on Google Drive for easy collaboration.

Researching the users

Helping the customer in developing his business model, allowed me to understand the users, business, competitors, the industry and the market at large. Using this data I set another meeting with the stakeholders to discuss requirements again with valid data to back it up. I then proceeded to start developing the persona, focusing on their needs and how they currently meet these needs, what they think they want and what they dont know they want, and what Zipay can do to meet their actual needs.

I first created an online survey to get an idea of the common pain points experienced by small businesses, I focused on necessity based businesses like barbing salons, one stop shops, carpenters and so on, and the factors that influence their decision-making process on geting and keeping customers.

I then moved on to the users, I ran a quick focus group with the stakeholder's families and friends, focusing on their daily spending choices, and businesses they visit every day, or once a week. We also discussed the platforms they use for savings, spending, and if they use point-based systems, and which ones they liked. Using the data from the focus group I was able to compile five key questions and create a survey through google forms, I targeted other classes of people I did not have enough data on and sent out the form. Due to time constraints, I needed the result in 48 hours so I used an Amazon gift card as an incentive to get quick results.

Lean business model

Working with the focus group and survey data developed the customer decision path, which helped me in refining the feature requirements.

Application feature development

I analysed data gathered from the market, customers and business, and using this data I compared the technology required to build the application. I then had a discussion with the customer about the possibility of development and platforms to consider, after our discussion It was agreed that I was to focus on an IOS application first, this is primarily because of Aesthetics, as the customer's current requirement is the ability to present a beautiful prototype that can wow the investors.

Information architecture

After compiling the features of the application in collaboration with the stakeholder, I built the site map and user flow.

UI element

Using IOS UI elements, I was able to quickly create a style guide, from there I moved on to creating the wireframe of the app and then turned it into the design.

Business use case

I solved the business case with the approach of point-based reward cards as the connection between the platform and the businesses, As a point base system, the platform offers reward card subscriptions to the businesses, offers guided tutorials on customer acquisition and retention, manages business rewards data and shares monthly analytics with businesses for continuous growth.

Customer use case

Based on customer feedback, the key features we ended up agreeing on implementing were the ability for the customer to be able to access multiple reward cards through offers, or searches. Add it to their account, and watch their rewards accumulate.

End result

Based on customer feedback, the key features we ended up agreeing on implementing were the ability for the customer to be able to access multiple reward cards through offers, search for a particular company, and get a notification to add a reward card when you purchase from a company. We also added strategic features that keep customers coming back like, viewing purchase history, and sharing purchases with friends.
